The Ego, The Id, and The Blog

People are inherently selfish. We do what satisfies ourselves. True, unadulterated altruism is a fallacy. You give a man on the street a dime. You feel better. You save someone’s life by diving on them as a subway train passes overhead. You feel as if you did the right thing.

It’s called endorphins, folks. The truly apathetic and unmotivated waste away in mental hospitals. They don’t commit “selfless” acts.

Is this wrong? No. It’s an essential part of the human condition, an essential part of survival. You don’t satisfy yourself, you die. Simple.

In short, we’re all egotistical bastards. Some of us admit it—most do not. Please, get off the high hobby horse and admit that you are actually an animal. I don’t care if you think your grandma wasn’t a chimpanzee. You’re still an animal.

Example: V’s latest post got dugg. Nothing too unusual; Digg practically functions as her comment system. However, this one went big. Front page and all. 660 diggs at last count.

Now, a sample comment:

Awesome? Oh please. Nothing more than pithy, self-indulgent musings. I’ll bet a large part of her enjoyed revealing that story to the internet - not only does it serve a certain catharsis, it allows her to revel in telling a tale of how she was popular in high school.

Again with the high hobby horse. Some people practically need to be spoon-fed reality from a high chair. Humanity is selfish. Period.

I won’t argue self-indulgent—so is that comment. It allows the person to feel intellectually superior to his chosen peers when his comment gets dugg up. Right on, mate. Welcome to the human race. Selfish bastard.

For the short time that I’ve followed V’s blog, she’s been dead on the money. In the FAQ, she theorizes about the popularity of her blog:

However, I do have a theory why so many people read this. In a nutshell, the Internet is too nice. I think people are getting bored with the saccharine sweet ass kissing that is rampant on the web and they’re looking for an alternative opinion. Right now, I’m pretty much the only one that offers an alternative opinion while simultaneously updating regularly.

In spite of all the hateful comments she gets, people still read it. People still spend their time on it. I’m pretty sure people still enjoy it.

If you didn’t catch it the first time, welcome to the human race. Selfish bastard.

True oh so very true no need to be mean about it tho.

I learned that the day after I was born. No need to dwell on it.
Chill.

In case you didn’t notice, this is a blog. It’s what I do here.
