A few points crept in after I first posted. In response to a few comments received from friends, c’est la deuxième partie. Here are the major ones.
- Cars are produced to a global audience, without a global speed limit. Usually, differing models are sold in disparate regions. Each region tends to have similar speed limits. Models could be produced to meet local restrictions with minimum effort. Some reductions might even result in a huge manufacturing savings.
- Cars are now computer controlled. Modern engines all rely on an EPU to control combustion. Included in this chip are often top speed limiters and rev limiters. It costs virtually nothing extra to produce cars programmed to comply with local law.
- Wouldn’t that stagnate the car economy? Sure! Ford, Toyota and company could no longer sell cars as becoming faster or more powerful. That removes a lot of incentive to buy a new model every year. Having less cars on the road couldn’t possibly be a good thing for the environment. Thanks gov’t.
